The new law on age discrimination comes into force this month. The law covers both old and young workers who are disadvantaged at work because of their age. This means that, because everyone has an age, anyone can make a claim! As with other types of unlawful discrimination, the age discrimination rules apply from the hiring stage to the ending of employment, so they are critical throughout the relationship between a school and member of staff. The new law will have far-reaching effects for all types of business, but there are a number of aspects of the law that have particular implications for schools. Both bursars and other members of senior management within schools will be responsible for understanding and implementing the new laws. So what are the main issues that schools need to be thinking about?
